A Healthy Home for Pets: Hidden Toxins & Aromas

One of our many responsibilities as a dog guardian is to keep our home safe, clean, and free from potential hazards. Dogs, cats, and other companion animals are curious, and while living under the same roof having a “what’s mine is yours” mindset is a safe assumption.

We do our best to keep our dogs from eating anything potentially dangerous, unplug certain appliances, and even keep the windows closed while they are left home alone. What a lot of us don’t consider is that the most dangerous hazard of all could be right beneath our noses - literally!

A dog’s nose is their super power. When you think about it, dogs can pick up on the past, present, and future of any given environment with just one whiff. Their sense of smell is so much stronger and smarter than our own that you have to wonder what is going through a dog’s body and mind when they smell something that WE may think smells pleasant, but is riddled with toxic chemicals.

A scientist at the ACS (American Chemical Society) reported to finding "anywhere from 800 to 1,500 chemicals" in scented candles. That’s right — you need hundreds and even THOUSANDS of different chemicals to make many of the smells we have grown to love, often replicating something that would otherwise be considered a “natural” scent.

Recent studies also show a strong correlation between prolonged exposure to scented candles and inflammation in the lungs, shortened life span, and exposure to carcinogens — all of which are just as bad for our dogs as they are for us.

So what’s a pet-parent to do when we want our houses clean and odor-free? Since Sama Dog is always trying to make healthy, spiritual living accessible to you and your dogs we decided to to take the guess work out of it for you with our new product, A Spark of Sama :: Balancing Candle for Your Dog and You.

A Spark of Sama Candles are dog-friendly using the smells of frankincense and vanilla combined with organic soy/coconut wax. They are hand-poured by Soul Spark Candles in Solana Beach, CA, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to Synergy Animal Rescue.
