Benny’s Dog Blog :: Pitta Dosha (mind/body type)

Hello human!

Benny here, your favorite dog-blogger, sharing some inside information about your canine friends. I’ve noticed you humans have a gazillion things going on most of the time, so let me ease the stress in one area of your life at least — you can have a relaxed, fun and healing relationship with your dog! I’m here to help.

Oh and you might notice that most of what I share has an "Ayurvedic" spin. Mainly because it’s good stuff… and also because I think I’m under my mom’s spell. This stuff is all she talks about!

She says that my dosha (mind/body type) is strongly “Pitta” dosha — so this makes me the fiery type. And I have to say, on this occasion, I must agree with her... although I don’t want to set too much of a precedent here.

I believe I have all the defining and, of course, wonderful qualities of a classic Pitta dog. Just look into my eyes and you’ll see my penetrating gaze and brilliant mind. Okay, okay… perhaps that’s a bit much. But us Pitta dogs are typically the smarter pups in the pack. We just can’t help ourselves.

It’s my fiery nature that gives me boundless energy, a strong personality and my never ending desire to seek things to DO!! It makes me curious and courageous, as well as protective and loyal. Be sure to give me a J.O.B.! Being purposeful is what it’s all about for Pittas. (Personally, I think these qualities make me irresistible. But it seems some humans can find it a bit annoying. Humph! I don’t prefer those humans).

I can fetch without end. And there’s no need to let that gift to go waste, people! I do all the running around and you just keep swingin’ that chucker stick and I’m happy as a clam. I hope we can at least agree on one thing – dogs aren’t all that complicated, right?!

My body temperature is usually warm so I prefer cool places (literally and figuratively). When the hot Southern California summer arrives I look for cool areas to chillax with ample shade and a big bowl of water with ice cubes. I keep hoping the 2-legs around here will install a dog pool! But I digress…

It really is important to be Pitta-conscious and help keep your pup’s body and mind cool. After all, you want a cool canine, not a hot dog!

Yeah, not that funny. I’ll keep my day job (for now… although I’m hoping this “dog-interpreter” thing starts panning out soon).

One last tip on how to help keep Pitta type dogs in balance. So… humans love to cuddle. That’s pretty clear. When I’ve asked they say they’re showing their love and it’s soothing for them. Alright, fine. But somedogbody has got to stand up and bark out to say – soothing for you!?! What about us!?

Alright so it’s true. Generally, we will tolerate your cuddling because we know it makes you so stinkin’ happy and we are just hard-wired to make you people happy. It’s our dharma; our purpose in life. But PLEASE, for the love of dog, moderate that super snuggly business when it comes to dogs who are of a fiery, intelligent, alert and independent nature.

As a representative of Pitta dogs (and possibly Pitta humans), I’d like you to know we’d prefer a good butt scratch and/or belly rub to confirm our relationship. Thank you for the consideration.

To wrap it up, a Pitta dosha dog can be a bit demanding because of our strong personality, it’s true. But we also make the most awesome dog-friends because (in most cases) we can bond deeply with our human’s and we have a passion for life.

Ah… what was that? Do I hear the car keys!?!? Gotta run!!

On behalf of somewhat misunderstood canines everywhere,

Benny out.
